On August 18th 2017 Governor Bruce Rauner singed HB 3773 into law. This bill updates the 30 year old Smoke Detector Act to reflect advances in technology and provides that over the next 5 Years, forward, newly installed smoke alarms contain a self-contained, long lasting battery. Since 1988 all dwelling units in Illinois have been required to have Smoke Alarms. Dwelling built since 1988 have been required to have them hardwired in the home, 
Data maintained by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) shows that Illinois has experienced 76 Fire deaths in 2017, second in the nation only to New York State.
