Applications for full-time employment and applications for student seasonal employment are maintained in the Human Resources Office for all positions except Fireman or Policeman. Applications are accepted at all times. Unsolicited applications remain on file one year. Solicited applications are kept for two years.
When openings occur, the position may be posted on the bulletin board in the lobby of the Municipal Building or on this web site. Openings for certain positions may be advertised in the newspaper. Current employees are given the opportunity to apply for vacant positions. Outside applicants may also be considered. Collective bargaining agreements exist for most City positions; all posting requirements in those agreements are followed.
Firemen and Policemen are hired by the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners through a series of physical aptitude test, written examination and oral examination. An eligibility list is established in each department every two years. As vacancies occur, candidates are hired from the eligibility list. Appointment is subject to satisfactorily passing an oral interview, in-depth psychological examination, a polygraph test, background investigation and a thorough medical examination by a licensed physician.
When testing occurs, it is advertised in the local newspaper. In addition, the information and application forms are made available on the department pages on this web site.
